A Dream of Lanzhou
Meituan Groupon

Lanzhou is a historically significant city in north-western China. It is the birthplace of the world-famous Lanzhou Beef Noodle, but also famous for its vibrant local cuisines and great folk songs. The Yellow River flows through the city, making it a cultural crossroads for the central plains and western regions.

This 10 min documentary-essay film on Lanzhou’s culinary culture takes inspiration from the great Chris Marker. It is about nostalgia, longing for a home that you can never leave and yet never go back to. Lanzhou’s youth population is declining, like many inland cities in China. Young people all leave their hometowns to move to big cities on the east coast for better opportunities. A sense of homesickness is accumulating among the younger generation as China’s modernization progresses.
